The Legend of Wine ( listen )
There was a time here in the Valais when the climate was much milder all year round than it is today, and people could live and make a living high up in the mountains. But then the climate began to change - it became cooler, more unstable and harsher again.
And so the real nomadic life began in Visperterminen in the first half of the 18th century. The people had homes and stables in various places, but had to be on the move all year round. And so you would see them in the spring going up from the village to the hamlets, from there further up to the foothills of the Alps and later even to the Alps. And in the autumn the whole long journey took them back down, even all the way to Visp. It was called "fircha gfahru" - from Grund to Grat.
But it wasn't just people who were out and about at that time. No, poor souls were also on the move. And so it happened that a good part of the way before the big bend in Visp , early in the morning, in the darkness, a winegrower's horse, who was on his way down to the valley to deliver his wine, got spooked. The driver managed to save himself at the last second, but his horse and the cart with the wine barrels plunged down the ravine and were, it seemed, lost forever. The winegrower crouched in the ditch, despairing, and turned to the poor souls and begged for their help. And indeed, it wasn't long before he heard a noise, went out onto the road and saw the funeral procession passing by. He plucked up courage and spoke to the dead. But they replied: "We can't help you, we have to hurry. The first are already on the Siwiboden, the last are outside in the bend. But these will be able to help you.”
And sure enough, when the funeral procession had ended, his horse suddenly appeared on the street, healthy again, and the wagon was loaded with sweeter and more delicious wine than ever. The winegrower delivered this fine wine to Visp and returned home to his loved ones in deep gratitude.
From then on, he pressed exactly this excellent grape juice, which soon enjoyed great popularity - also thanks to his knowledge of the history surrounding the creation of the wine .
