The Legend of Wine ( listen )
Two winegrowers from the Valais claimed that each of them had the best red wine in the Rhone Valley . They praised their own grape variety and their unsurpassable craftsmanship above all else and at every opportunity they spoke highly of the other's wine. Over the years, this developed into a bitter argument that divided both families terribly.
Two young people suffered particularly from the quarrel - the daughter of one had lost her heart to the son of the other winegrower and the two lovers had a deep desire to get married. But both of their fathers refused to give their blessing. The unhappy couple soon became so desperate that they didn't know what to do and decided to complain about their suffering to the village priest and seek divine advice from him. He summoned the two quarreling winegrowers and spoke to their consciences.
But the two old squabblers remained irreconcilable and showed no understanding, so the two lovers secretly left their village to seek happiness far away. They only returned when their fathers had died of grief and unrelenting quarrelsomeness. As a sign of reconciliation between the two families, the young couple stored the grapes of these two grape varieties together in the cellar, and a wine was created that combined the best of both.
